Hendricks takes a no-hitter into the eighth inning, as the Cubs blank the Cardinals.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Friday night, Kyle Hendricks pitched a no-hitter into the eighth inning and Nico Hoerner homered to help the Chicago Cubs defeat the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0.

Ian Happ also drove in a run for the Chicago Cubs, who have won two of their last three games.


Hendricks (3-6) resumed his dominance against the Cardinals, who had defeated the Cubs 12 of the previous 17 times. In 7 1/3 scoreless innings, he allowed five hits, struck out six batters, and walked one. Hendricks improved to 13-3 versus his NL Central foes in 25 career starts, his best record against any club.


Hendricks has surrendered six or more earned runs in four of his previous 13 appearances. His most recent victory was a 6-0 victory against San Diego on May 9.

After replacing Hendricks in the eighth inning, Chris Martin escaped a one-out jam with runners on second and third. David Robertson completed his ninth save in 12 chances.


Hoerner hit a two-run home run against Cardinals starting pitcher Andre Pallante (2-3). In 17 of his past 20 games, Hoerner has reached safety.


In the fifth inning, Happ extended the advantage to 3-0 with an RBI double.


In six innings, Pallante gave up three runs on seven hits. He fanned two batters and walked three.


St. Louis has won ten of its past fourteen home games.


Chicago climbed to 4-4 with the conclusion of a 1-11 slump on June 16.

St. Louis LHP Friday, Steven Matz threw an extensive bullpen session. Tuesday is slated to be his debut with Memphis Triple-A. Since May 23, he has been sidelined with left shoulder impingement.


TRAINER'S ROOM


Cubs: 1B David Bote was activated before to the start of the game. He began the game at second base but went 0-for-4. Bote missed the first seventy games due to left shoulder surgery.


Cardinals: RHP Right shoulder impingement caused Drew VerHagen to be put on the 15-day disabled list. Recalled from Triple-A Memphis is LHP Packy Naughton (0-2, 5.50).


COMING NEXT


In the second game of a three-game series on Saturday afternoon, St. Louis RHP Miles Mikolas (5-5, 2.64 ERA) will play Arizona RHP Adrian Sampson (0-0, 0.00 ERA). In 12 appearances versus the Cubs, Mikolas is 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA. Sampson, who will be making his first start of the season, has not allowed a run across 5 2/3 innings in two relief outings.
